Garden Gnomes Halloween Costume

There are GNOME worries when Phoenix and Gryphon are dressed up as friendly garden gnomes. Gryphon the gnome is relaxing atop a giant flower, while Phoenix the gnome is ready to water the flowers with a watering can. The dogs love outdoors and we thought dressing them up as cute little gnomes in an enchanted garden would be adorable.

Materials and Tools:

  • Girl gnome costume for child
  • Stuffing
  • Needle and thread
  • Red and white gloves
  • Red striped socks
  • 2 pairs of red elf shoes
  • Scissors
  • 2 Red gnome hats
  • Yellow yarn
  • Glue
  • Boy gnome outfit for child
  • Foamboard
  • Spray foam insulation
  • Yellow paint
  • Pink fabric
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • Green tube skirts
  • Artificial leaves

Step 1: Girl Gnome Outfit

We wanted to create an outfit that looked like the dog had the tiny little body of a gnome, with arms and legs. We adjusted a gnome costume intended for a human to fit a dog, by sewing and tying it in place to shorten it. We stuffed the arms to give them shape, and added red gloves to the ends, which we also stuffed. The dog wore red striped socks with red felt elf shoes. We cut the bottom out of the shoes, so they would rest over the dog’s paws, and the dog could rest his paws on the ground comfortably.

Step 2: Girl Gnome Hat and Hair

We got a red gnome hat, and wanted to add blonde braids to it to make it look like a girl gnome. We used thick yellow yarn, which we tightly braided into two braids. We then glued the braids on either side of the hat. We also added bangs by gluing short lengths of yarn individually to the front of the hat, between the braids.

Step 3: Boy Gnome Outfit

We fixed up another gnome outfit for the other dog in the same way. We stuffed the arms and legs, and added white gloves which were stuffed for the hands. We also added red shoes to the ends of the legs.

Step 4: Boy Gnome Flower Illusion

To make the giant flower the gnome appeared to be sitting on, we started by cutting a circle out of foamboard. We then cut a hole in the circle big enough so that it would rest on the dog’s mid-section. We then used spray foam insulation to coat the circle and give it a bumpy texture, like that of a center of a flower. We let this dry overnight, and then painted it yellow. To make the petals, we also used foamboard, which we cut into petal shapes. We then glued pink fabric over the foamboard, completely covering each petal on both sides, and trimming off any excess. We then glued each petal going around the foamboard circle with the glue gun. We curled them inward slightly, to give them a petal look. To create the flower stem, we used a green tube skirt. We glued the top edge of it all along the bottom edge of the hole in the foamboard circle. We then added artificial leaves onto the skirt. This skirt hung down, creating a stem shape, when the whole flower was placed over the dog’s head.
