8 Different Types of Paint Applied on Interior and Exterior Wall

A well-constructed house without paint looks like a ruin, while a perfectly painted average property looks stunning. Selecting the perfect combination of colors for painting increases the worth of the property.

The history of painting the house is too ancient, approximately 3000 years old, and now the business of paint is increasing exponentially.

Most of the time, people remain anxious because their house wall paint does not stay in the wall as it should be. This is because they use the same type of paint for the different surfaces that face varied environmental conditions.

Oil-based paints should be used on the exterior wall of the house because it does not fade. Water-based paint can be used in the kitchen and bathrooms, and so on.

Here are a few types of paint used for different purposes on the exterior and interior walls.

Different types of paint

Oil-based paint

Oil-based paint is durable and the most reliable type of paint that may last for years. Oil such as linseed oil, poppy oil, and nut oil is used as the vehicle, while you can add solvents like spirit or varnish to give it a glossy appearance.

Oil-based paint does not peel off or fade for long, so you don’t need to refinish your house. Apart from buildings, it is also used to paint metal, wood, and ships. It protects the wood from moisture. You can apply this paint both on the exterior and interior walls.

The drawback of this paint is its hazardous fumes that create health issues. The oil-based paint takes many hours to dry and emits a continuous smell.

Water-based paint

It is the second most common paint but is not as durable or long-lasting as oil-based paint. The attractive property of water-based paint is its ability to be cleaned by soap and water. If your kitchen is painted with water-based paint, then you can easily clean it.

Water-based paint has several advantages over its oil-based cousin. It does not emit hazardous fumes that is why it is preferred. Its drying time is also much less than oil-based paint. Water-based paint does not lose color in direct sunlight, so you can also use it for exterior paint.

An emulsion is the mixture of two liquid components that can not intermix with each other like water in oil or oil in water emulsion. The emulsion is composed of water, oil, pigment, binder, and additive in which the water is approx 50 to 60%.

The emulsion is flexible, durable, and can be dried easily, so you can use it for painting walls, ceiling, and wood.

Latex-based paint

Latex-based paint should not be confused with water-based paint. On the contrary, water-based paint is formulated with synthetic resin and pigments. Mostly, it is used to apply on the concrete wall and floor. Like water-based paint, this latex-based paint can also clean up with the help of soap and water.

Fungicidal paint

Fungicidal or anti-fungal paint is characterized by its fungus-resistant property. The anti-bacterial and fungal activity of this paint is due to the presence of biocidal pigment zinc oxide.

Fungus is the biggest problem of the rainy season. After the heavy rain of the month fungus starts its growth on the wall and produces a noxious smell. This fungal growth creates serious issues if it grows in sensitive areas like in the medicine manufacturing area or in a biosafety lab.

Fungicidal paint does not allow the growth of microbes and also kills them. You can also apply anti-fungal paint on the wall of the kitchen and bathroom.

Anti-corrosive paints

It is formulated to save the metals from oxidative-reductive reactions that lead to corrosion or rusting. You can protect the metal surface and pipes from corrosion with the help of this paint.

Anti-corrosive paint contains zinc chromate, zinc oxide, lead, and linseed oil. Zinc and lead act as an anti-corrosive agent, while linseed is a binder. These compounds block the reaction of water and air with the metal and hence reduce corrosion.

You can use this type of paint to apply to iron and steel surfaces. Anti-corrosive paint is long-lasting or durable paint, and it is also pocket-friendly.

Whitewash paint

Whitewash is the least expensive and most common type of paint. It is the oldest type of paint which is formed by mixing chalk and slaked lime. On the newly constructed house, the painter first applies whitewash over the wall.

Whitewash paint can be applied on the concrete or cemented wall and also on woody surfaces. It is less durable, but you can increase the durability by adding glue. You can also add pigment to it if needed.

Satin paint

If you want to give the surface a velvety look, then you can use satin. It is used for bedroom, dining room, kitchen, and bathroom paint. You can also apply satin paint on wooden doors. These types of paints are washable, and it is a good fit for high traffic areas.
